Relearning the Sun
New Works by Shadé Bell
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 5th 2025
Show Description
Relearning the Sun is a personal exploration of love, community, and self-discovery. This exhibition brings together two years of work—physical and digital paintings alongside poetry—that capture moments of kindness and connection while also confronting the weight of depression, loss, and trauma. Through art, Shadé has navigated the complexities of healing, learning to harness her energy as both a source of strength and creative expression. Relearning the Sun is a testament to resilience, transformation, and the journey toward rediscovering the light in the midst of darkness.
Artist Statement
Shadé Bell is an abstract folkloric painter whose work is deeply infl uenced by her community, grief, and personal experiences. She blends bright, contrasting colors with mixed media to capture moments—sometimes even those revealed in dreams. Her art transforms sorrow into something luminous, using a vibrant palette to channel powerful healing energy.
Recurring imagery, such as black-and-white fi gures representing a congregation of angels, alongside butterfl ies, suns, and moons, forms a visual language of resilience and connection. These elements weave together abstract stories of transformation, love, and endurance that help the artist navigate life’s shifts, from evolving relationships to new environments. Through her work, Shadé reminds us that even when the weight of the crown feels overwhelming, we are never alone—our ancestors, family, and community stand with us, lifting us up.
