Montressa Hammond
“When Color Returns: A Journey of Renewal”
Opening Reception: Friday, November 8th 2024
When Color Returns: A Journey of Renewal offers a deep exploration of transformation and resilience in the wake of unexpected challenges, particularly the recovery journey following a stroke. This exhibit encourages viewers to consider renewal as both a noun—an act of resuming life after disruption—and as an adjective—the process of mending what is worn or broken.
Montressa Hammond's artwork captures the poignant struggle of grieving one’s former self while navigating the challenge of redefining identity. Through her pieces, she reflects on experiences of despair and growth, emphasizing the necessity of grace in embracing a new self. This path to acceptance is marked by a bold commitment to live confidently and without regret, illustrating the gradual evolution of her artistic voice, shaped by perseverance and the pursuit of what once seemed unattainable. In this journey, she begins to feel more empowered, learning to navigate the world around her with newfound strength and clarity.
The exhibit showcases a collection of works illustrating how even a single action—be it a moment of self-care or a decision to create—can spark significant change. This underscores the idea that the pursuit of knowledge and a commitment to self-improvement are essential for continuous renewal. Each piece serves as a reminder that every day offers a fresh opportunity for renewal, inspiring viewers to invest in their personal growth and make meaningful impacts. When Color Returns celebrates resilience, inviting everyone to embrace their transformative journeys and recognize the beauty in becoming something new.
About the Artist
Montressa Hammond, born in Baltimore, MD, and raised in Prince George's County, is a visual artist and founder of Stroke of Art, a contemporary art company in Maryland. A University of Maryland graduate, she holds a Bachelor’s in Family Science and dual Master’s degrees in Non-Profit Management and Business Administration.
Montressa’s artistic journey transformed after a stroke in May 2020, which affected the right side of her brain, resulting in nerve damage, cognitive delays, and aphasia. Despite having no prior painting experience, she began creating art two months later, initially focusing on abstract pieces before branching into seascapes and portraits.
Using vibrant colors like neon greens, her technique creates layered, oil-like blends with acrylic paint, conveying deep emotions that often elude verbal expression. Her notable work, “Intimacy in Shades of Green” (2023), explores connections between her personal narrative and audience perceptions. Blending realism and surrealism, Montressa’s art reflects her journey of relearning complex emotions and fostering community.
Her work has received recognition in Voyage Baltimore Magazine, Bold Journey Magazine, and Canvas Rebel Magazine. In 2023, she was honored at the Bethesda Row Art Festival, and her art is included in the recently published book Art and Woman: The Life and Creative World of 100 Women Artists From Around The World. Montressa continues to create art that resonates with everyday experiences, encouraging connection and empathy through expressionism.
